Still Boring

There is nothing new worth flagging in the wards today. If anything, the unusual cases I was so worried about a few weeks ago seem to be folding neatly into the usual background noise of the hospital. You stop noticing the ‘vacant’ stares when you’ve seen them fifty times; they just become another symptom to manage, like a cough or a fever. That might be the most convincing argument yet that this was never actually a ‘thing’ at all—it was just a statistical cluster that we gave a scary name to. The human mind is excellent at normalizing the strange once it becomes frequent. We aren’t in a horror movie; we’re just in a busy hospital in the middle of a long year. I think it’s time I admitted that Alice was probably just tired.
