It’s a heatwave, the wards are sticky, and everyone’s temper is incredibly short. Every summer in the NHS, we relearn the same lesson: heat makes people act strange. It dehydrates them, agitates them, and brings out the worst in their underlying conditions. If there’s a unifying explanation for everything we’ve seen on this blog, that’s my best guess. Human bodies don’t cope well with this kind of humidity, and the mind usually follows. We’re seeing more ‘vacant’ patients because they’re heat-stroked, not because they’re turning into monsters. We need a good rainstorm to wash the weirdness away.
