The reports from the perimeter say that nothing crossed the outer roads last night. I suppose that’s meant to be good news. It’s the kind of update they give us to keep us from panicking. But ‘good’ is a relative term these days. It all depends on whether you think the barrier is there to keep something out, or to keep all of us in. From where I’m sitting in the hospital, the town feels less like a fortress and more like a petri dish. The perimeter is holding, but the contents of the container are changing every single day. I watched the sunrise over the barricades this morning and wondered which side of the line I’d rather be on.
