I spent an hour comparing notes with Ernie today. We come from different worlds—him from the libraries and me from the wards—but we share the same core instinct: if you can’t stop a disaster, the least you can do is document it properly. We sat in the breakroom and laid out our observations like puzzle pieces. His records of the town’s history and my records of the patients’ vitals are starting to overlap in ways I don’t like. We’ve reached the point where we’ve stopped trying to ‘fix’ the situation. We are just the scribes now, recording the fall so that if anyone ever finds this, they’ll know we were paying attention.
